A Valencia High School student’s life was saved by an AED after going into cardiac arrest during basketball practice.
Basketball player, Chibuzo Ikonte, suddenly collapsed on the court during practice and lost consciousness. Thankfully, teammates and fellow students who were taking sports medicine courses reacted quickly and took immediate action which lead to Ikonte’s life being saved.
Student Michael Monteleone was busy in the sports medicine classroom helping to prep student athletes for their upcoming practice. Basketball Coach Rocket came storming into the classroom and said, “I have an athlete down with chest pain.” Monteleone immediately grabbed an automatic external defibrillator (AED) and rushed to the gymnasium where he found Ikonte unconscious with no pulse. With the help of another student, Colton Morgan, they hooked up the AED and brought Ikonte back to consciousness before paramedics arrived.
This story is another indication of how important it is to have AED on hand in school and gymnasiums.
