Indian Firm Buys Cardiac Science for $54 Million

Cardiac Science, a Bothell-based manufacturer of AEDs or external automated defibrillators and other medical devices, has just been sold to Bangalore, India-based Opto Circuits. The Dow Jones put the price of the established deal at $54 million, or $2.30 per share. The finalized deal marks a 10% premium over the closing price from the day before.

A 51-year-old woman from Rochester, New York, collapsed during the Detroit Marathon on October 17th, 2010. The woman, who was running her first marathon, collapsed near the second mile marker as she suffered cardiac arrest. Medical technicians performed CPR and restored her heartbeat through the use of an AED.

A man is alive today due to the ready access of an automated external defibrillator and the quick thinking of three men. The Mayor of West Kelowna told the City's Council that on October 6th at the Royal LePage Place hockey rink an unidentified man collapsed in the dressing room during a recreational hockey game. Dave Stewart, an employee of the facility, came to the rescue and saved the man.

Chicago native Elizabeth Pearlman collapsed while taking part in a conditioning drill with her college basketball team last October. As Pearlman and her doctors state, if it wasn't for an AED being readily available, that day in the fall of 2009 likely would have been her last.
